Coming home to Parasympathetic

'It is no measure of health to be well-adjusted to a profoundly sick society.'

The revolutionary science of Epi-genetics has been discovering that genetic determinism is misleading and in fact our genes are dependant on external and internal environments that determine how it will express itself. In other words, yes we may have a disposition for a particular disease or condition, but whether or not it comes to manifest depends on factors above and beyond(epi) our genetics. Examples of this would be our food intake, our stress levels, environmental conditions, and internal conditions pertaining to emotions and psychology.

In our excessively ‘yang’ minded society, we are driven to constantly be on the go, achieve, acquire and compete to survive. This has put us predominately in our Sympathetic Nervous system (yang) which is designed for ‘fight or flight’ when we are threatened by a stressor. The truth is, we are not constantly ‘being chased by a Saber-toothed Tiger,’ as Ph.D. Dr.Bruce Lipton, Cell Biologist at the helm of Epi-genetics would say. So in that manner we are constantly expending our energies to an imaginary, perceived threat, conditioned by the culture of our society to keep up, surpass or get trampled. The other truth is that not all people have the disposition to thrive in this manner. We are all different, and for some, life at a more leisurely pace is what is best for them. We are organically designed to be, predominately, in our Parasympathetic Nervous system (yin) which is ‘rest and digest’ (Digestive issues anyone?). We have exiled the importance of Yin, banishing the need to integrate feminine principalities of nature and nurture. The body does it’s repairs during a good night’s sleep and heals when in a deep rest state. Both masculine and feminine are necessary to produce life. Our bodies are of earth, considered feminine. Our minds are of an electrical nature, the masculine. To honour the bodymind is whole self-care. To shut off the TV, tune the world out and go within, contemplate, and get back into connection with your nature, your truth via your heart (yin) is necessary to gain clarity. A practice of self love & inquiry and observation is where wisdom can be heard. According to Heartmath, the magnetic resonance of the heart is more than 100 × stronger than that of the brain. The heart is also the first organ formed by the body. Be kind to the self by taking the time to ask questions about what is most important to you. What do you really think, feel, love, want and need? Are you doing the things that you enjoy, that interest you?  Practice listening (feminine) to your body. Pain is the way she communicates to you unresolved issues. What actions can you take to be of support to your body and state of mind? When you have clarity you can then take action (masculine) towards that which is more aligned with who you are. Cultivate self empowerment by making choices to create more desirable situations in your life or to feel better in spite of your circumstances to work through challenges. You will also have much more energy on reserve to achieve a great feat when necessary. Let’s get back to balance and wholeness by getting to know our Yin side and take time to smell the roses.🌹
